Norfolk was a railroad junction until 1912 when the Burlington Northern Railway severed its line from Omaha to Norfolk. The Norfolk and Western Railroad also served Norfolk before it merged with the Union Pacific Railroad in 1988. In 2001, Norfolk became an independent city after voters approved a charter amendment creating it as an unincorporated community within Omaha Mayor Tom Friel's jurisdiction. The first settlers to arrive in what is now Norwich were Anna Hargrave and her husband Isham Hargrave who arrived on July 4th, 1887 from Michigan via Buffalo Niagara Falls on their way home from traveling through Ohio and Indiana to meeting John Clementson at Fort Dodge; they were followed three weeks later by their son George Hargrave (1888-1970) who had come overland with his family from Illinois on horseback following United States President James K Polk's visit to that area two months earlier on May 7th, 1888 which led to Ulysses S Grant endorsing him for president on June 3rd against Adlai Stevenson
