Norfolk, Nebraska is a small town in the US state of Nebraska. The population was 5,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Omaha-Council Bluffs, NE Metropolitan Statistical Area. Norfolk is located on the Missouri River about 12 miles (19 km) north of Omaha and about 26 miles (41 km) east of Council Bluffs. The area that would become Norfolk was first settled by European colonists in 1847 as part of what would become Iowa Territory. In 1865, the Kansas–Nebraska Act placed Nebraska within Oklahoma Territory and made Norfolk a part of that territory. By 1880, Norfolk had reached its current size with 4,500 residents. Norfolk became an incorporated town in 1904 and has since grown steadily in population with much growth coming from agriculture and construction work done by settlers throughout the years including both white and black Americans who moved to Norfolk during the late 19th century as well as Mexican American immigrants who arrived after Mexican independence from Spain was declared in 1912. Today, many businesses still operate within Norfolk including banks, restaurants, stores, schools and more.
