Naval History and Heritage Command's history of the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, including its shipbuilding activity from the days of the old navy to the present day, is a rich and colorful document. For more than 125 years, NHC has been building warships for our country at Norfolk. The shipyards were first established in 1814 as one of four sites in what is now Portsmouth, New Hampshire, for construction of frigates (vessels designed to protect American coasts and seas). The original site was on the south side of Portsmouth Harbor. It later moved to North Beach on Hampton Roads because it was less expensive to build warships there than in nearby Portsmouth. In 1846, NHC became part of The United States Navy and continued building warships under that name until 1945. Over time, other naval yards were built around Norfolk; however, the USS Norfolk (CA-19) remains the only warship ever built at NHC specifically for use in World War II. She was launched on October 3rd 1941 and served with distinction through most of her career before being decommissioned in 1946. acquired bythe US Navy as part ofthe Atlantic Fleet during World War II#1 At her commissioning ceremony she was christened USS Constitution (CV-4), but she reverted back to her original name after veteran crewmembers refused an award given to them posthumously for their wartime service aboard Constitution. By 1941, however, the Norfolk yard had become one of America's leading builders of warships and submarine boats. In that decade, shipyards in Portsmouth, New Hampshire; Mobile, Alabama; and Quincy, Massachusetts built some of the largest warships in history-the USS Constitution (launched on April 12th, 1797), USS Monitor (launched on December 14th, 1861), and USS Maine (launched on October 26th, 1917). In 1944-1945 the men who built USS Saratoga (CV-2) at the Norfolk yard lost their lives when that ship became a victim of Japanese forces during World War II.
