On December 7, 1941, the United States of America was bombed by Japan. The North Platte Air Force was mobilized and sent to support the United States during World War II. From 1941-1945, the North Platte Air Force deployed gift history in support of the war effort. In 1945,North Platte AFB closed and all its planes were mothballed. However, many planes still remain in storage at NAFC located in Greeley, Colorado as part of the Nebraska Army National Guard's Aerospace Museum collection. The air force deployed gift history in support of various missions throughout World War II such as supplies dropping over Afghanistan duringOperation Tora Bora; bombarding Japanese targets; providing aerial refueling for American bombers during Operation Overlord; and providing fighter escort for bombers flying over Europe during Operation Battleaxe. Today, Gift History is still an important part of USAF culture and operations across America. This move made North Platte more important than ever as it became the capital of Nebraska. The city developed many new businesses such as hospitals and factories. In 1930 North Platte annexed what is now Wahoo Beach to create another adjacent area for housing and business development. The city has experienced many changes throughout its history including several fires which have destroyed most of its buildings; however, due to its strong economy and downtown location, North Platte has always been able to rebound from these tragedies. Today North Platte remains one of Nebraska's most vibrant cities with a active cultural scene that includes music festivals (such as the Omaha Folk Festival), art galleries, restaurants/bars/cafés/stores/,and nightlife venues
The North Platte Valley was a region on the Great Plains that was home to many Native American cultures. The area now includes Nebraska and Kansas. The Sioux and Cheyenne were the most dominant groups in this region until they were displaced by European settlers in the late 1800s.
