The Omaha Air Force Base Griffiss Museum has a rich airforce gift history that began with the donation of a Piper Cub to the base in 1938. From then on, the base became home to an extensive collection of military aircraft and tools and equipment from all over the world. In 1957, the Omaha Air Force Station was dedicated and served as the main hangar for all planes at Griffiss AFB. The station also housed two R-4B reconnaissance drones used by the USAF for mapping missions over North America. These drones were donated by aircraft manufacturer Boeing in 1969. In 1994, when it merged with other units at Omaha AFB, Griffiss AFB became part of Nebraska's Air National Guard structure. As such, it continued to be home to many aircraft including F-16s, A-10s and E-3 AWACS Joint Strike Fighters until 2006 when it was closed down due to budget cuts. Today only a few relics remain from this interesting past including an F-15E Eagle jet fighter belonging to Griffs' first airborne unit which was activated in 1951 and crashed into a field near Superior in 1990 after serving as surplus property of Curtis LeMay's USAAF during World War II.
