South Sioux City is a city in Douglas County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 17,591 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat for Douglas County. South Sioux City is part of the Omaha metropolitan area. The town of Kearney was founded in 1868 by prospectors from Iowa Territory and named after General John A. Kearney who fought in the American Civil War and served as commander of the Union army's 1st Infantry Brigade. Kearney had been appointed military governor of Nebraska Territory following Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation which freed all slaves in that territory on January 1, 1865. The town became an incorporated municipality on December 12, 1870 with a population of 3200 residents. On August 29, 1907, South Sioux City received land from Dodge Township to make up its total area; this included what is now parts of downtown and portions of north side streets east of Main Street. In 1861 an act providing for education withinNebraska Territory was passed by the legislature; this act provided for teachers to be hired by townships through direct contract withthe state government instead of being hired by individuals as was customary at that time. On May 7, 1862 Dodge Township voted to fire their teacher because he did not sign a pledge promising not to teach any white children in his township without prior written consent from their parents or guardians – an act considered racist at the time. In response to this protestation against educational discrimination one local man set up a school for white children adjoining his home where he taught them until 1863 when he moved away due to racial violence between black Americans and whites near his home village on the Missouri River known as "Dodgeville". After learning about this activity he built a school next door which continued operations until 1966 when it burned down due to lack of maintenance funds necessary for such an important facility during that time period in Nebraska history! The first public high school opened in South Sioux City on October 9th 1902 under direction of Superintendent Matson using $5 donated by Mrs.[? L?] Sanger (later Miss) Kappie and additional support from citizens including Mrs[? F?] Schlosser (Mrs.? Gus] Boehringer). Classes were held at Redeemer Baptist Church until 1915 when new buildings were built on State Street west of Main Street across from present-day Wilkinson Air Force Base headquarters (now US Army Garrison Fort Benning). At that point instruction began in earnest at South Dakota High School located adjacent to US Army Garrison Fort Benning also operated out OF THE STATE OF NEBRASKA INDIANS ONLY! From then until 1952 there was only one high school open statewide! That institution closed permanently along with most other schools within two decades!!! Mr.[? J? Haughton], longtime superintendent made headlines September 5th 1951 when [he announced plans]to build a new high school adjacent [sic] Ft[enning] just east off I-80! This project however never got off the ground as funding dried up again!! With World War II raging and no end horizon in sight many Nebraskans decided they would rather simply send their kids into militarized fields than have them attend college!!! As you can see things have changed dramatically since those days!!!!! Today’s students are someof America’s best; they bring great skills back into our communities while creating jobs too
