Carson City is a city in Pershing County, Nevada, United States. The population was 5,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Reno–Sparks metropolitan area. The city was founded on August 29, 18R9 by Mormon pioneers who arrived there in wagon trains from Utah. Carson City became a town on September 6, 1869. On July 15, 1870, it became an incorporated city and adopted its present name of Carson City on November 3 of that year. The first coffee shops opened in Carson City in the late 1800s and early 1900s. By 1907 there were more than 20 coffee shops operating in Carson City alone! In 1916 they had 120! Some of these early cafes still operate today including: Joe's Café (opened 1912), Dutch Bros Coffee & Tea (1915),Honest John's Coffee House (1920), and Big Ben's Cafe (1925). In 1927 the first Starbucks opened up in downtown Carson City with owner Howard Schultz coming from Seattle to open what would become one of America’s most iconic coffee businesses. Reno, Nevada is the capital of Carson City, Nevada. It was founded on January 8, 1864 by John C. Fremont and named in honor of General James H. Carson. The city was designated as the permanent capital of Nevada on February 14, 1907 by a vote of the state legislature. During World War II, Carson City played an important role in providing munitions storage and transport to the Nevada battlefields. After the war ended, Carson City declined somewhat until it regained some of its former stature as a business center during the late 1990s and 2000s boom period known as "Carson Valley". Today, much of downtown is still home to businesses including banks and law firms; while other parts have been redevelopment into high-end housing developments or are used primarily for entertainment purposes such as casinos or hotels
