The National Guard of Nevada was established on August 16, 1912 by the Nevada Legislature. The original unit was made up of state militia and men from the Carson City area who had volunteered to serve in World War I. In 1922, the National Guard's mission was amended to include providing security for state government buildings and other public amenities. On November 15, 1930, the Nevada Legislature created a separate state military reserve battalion called The Reno Volunteer Infantry Battalion which could be activated by order of the governor. On January 1, 1942, National Guardsmen were mobilized as part of World War II efforts and served in New Guinea and Burma. They were finally discharged from service on September 5, 1945. The Reno Volunteer Infantry Battalion was reactivated again on October 24th 1946 as The Carson City National Guard Company A and remained inactive until federal funding expired on December 31st 1957. On May 14th 1959 the Carson City National Guard Company C (National Guard Armory) merged with The Reno Volunteer Infantry Battalion becoming an all-volunteer unit known as "The Sierra Club" Company C (The Sierra Club Armory). On July 1st 1960 this company became an all-female unit also known as "The Red Lobster". Today there are over 4200 members of the National Guard system in Nevada including 8 companies that fall under Headquarters & Support Command - Nevada Division - Carson City where you will find our armories housing both active duty and Reserve units plus training facilities such as Camp Swiftwater located just outside of town at Blessing Lake Recreation Area
