Sparks, Nevada is a small town located in Washoe County, Nevada. As of the 2010 census, the population was 9,569. The name "Sparks" is derived from the Spanish word "sparcido," meaning spruce or fir tree. The first post office at Sparks was established on December 8, 1875. In 1907, the community became part of Reno and was renamed Sparks for General William Teller Sparks who served as military governor of Nevada from 1907-1911. Located in central Washoe County straddling Rte 89 and Hwy 395, Sparks offers easy access to both Reno and Las Vegas while also boasting a wide variety of recreational opportunities such as hiking and biking trails that run through its streets. With an average elevation of 471 feet (150 meters), Sparks is one of the highest communities in NV. The history of Sparks begins with gold prospectors who stumbled across bluffs near present-day downtown on November 16, 1859. For over 50 years there has been a steady flow of new settlers moving into this small town - many coming during the period leading up to World War II when it became an important center for aircraft production thanks to its location on Mitchell Air Force Base (now known as Luke Air Force Base).
