Claremont is one of the few towns in New England that has preserved its downtown district and shopping center as part of its core fabric since it became a incorporated town in 1907. The Town of Claremont was first settled by English Protestants who founded the town on November 6, 1799 to avoid religious persecution in Massachusetts. The town's name comes from the Irish word cláirgeoir which means "a marketplace." Claremont experienced rapid growth after incorporation and rapidly annexed adjacent villages until it had a population of 10,000 by 1824. In 1907, the original downtown district (now called First Street) was destroyed by fire and rebuilt with new buildings including a library and post office. The shopping center remained open until 1984 when it closed due to economic decline. In 2006, plans were announced to demolish the shopping center and create a park within its boundaries. However, this plan exploded into public opposition after local businesses saw their profits eliminated while the proposed park would have only modest benefits for them. A referendum approved demolition of the mall but left intact the library/post office complex which remains an important commercial node in Claremont today
