Claremont, New Hampshire is a town in Claremont County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest of the 10 towns in Claremont County. The name "Claremont" means "humble and peaceful." Claremont was first settled by English colonists in 1620 as part of what is now Vermont. In 1764, General George Washington visited the area and recommended to his commanders that they move their armies westward into Quebec to confront an Indian uprising there. This recommendation led to the establishment of Fort Pitt on the north side of town in 1765. The town's namesake was James Bowdoin who served as governor of Rhode Island from 1785-1787 and also taught at Dartmouth College from 1789-1792 before moving to Claremont where he founded Bowdoin College in 1802. In 1807, during Andrew Jackson's Ulysses S Grant presidency, Claremont became one of eight towns within what is now West Virginia which were annexed by West Virginia after Jackson's victory over Robert E. Lee in Battle of Antietam Creek Millsen House near present day Mount Vernon (on White Sulphur Springs Road). In 1865, when New Hampshire became a state following its merger with Vermont, Claremont became part of Buncombe County and retains this designation to this day
Claremont was founded in 1764 by Captain John Claremont and his wife, Deborah. The town was named after Claremont's estate, which lay just outside of the settlement. In 1800, Captain John Claremont donated land to the town for a school and library. The first public school opened in 1809. In 1825, the town voted to incorporate as a village. On July 1, 1830, Claremont became a town when all of New Hampshire incorporated as towns did.
