The town was named for Claremont House in England where Annuita and her husband, Colonel John Childs lived from 1775 to 1780 while he served as an American envoy to Great Britain. In 1814, when Mr. Ticknor built his house on present day Main Street near the center of town, it became known as "Ticknor's Corner." In 1828, a post office called Claremont was established; it remained in operation until 1861. The first store in Claremont opened on December 12, 1829 by J. Wigglesworth and Fanny Price under the name of "Gardener's Store," later renamed "The Home Store." It was owned by Heman Keyes until 1870 when he sold it to Amos Stevens who changed the name to "Claremont stores." The first school in Claremont opened on October 6, 1830 by Mrs. George Mason with 20 students; it continued operating until September 15th 1865 when it closed because of lack of funds due to changes in ownership and enrollment within the community which led to increased competition among schools throughout what is now Manchester-by-the-Sea On February 14th 1860 Samuel Morse set up his telegraph line between Boston and Worcester MA over what is now Route 9 north of town giving Claremonters their first phone connection In 1861 local residents voted not to annex into Uniontown so that they could have more direct access to NH Routes 10A & 10B becoming known as the “Non Annexed’ Town” On July 1st 1870 Clara Barton organized Lucy Stone's Colored Women's Republican Club setting up meeting places at various businesses including The Home Store and Ladies Aid Society before Manning had its first black woman elected into office – Alice Paul Howe On November 5th 1870 Mr./Mrs./Miss Anna Wheeler donated land east of Main Street (now Route 9) for a new school which would become Knowlton School #2
