The Claremont National Guard was established on October 1, 1916 as the New Hampshire State Militia. The unit was originally composed of men and women who had been drafted out of their homes to fight in World War I. The unit was redesignated the Claremont National Guard on February 14, 1942 as a Reserve Unit. On May 8, 1944, the New Hampshire National Guard was mobilized for war service and became part of the United States Army. On September 11, 1945, the United States military withdrew from World War II and the New Hampshire National Guard remained in reserve status until its activation for duty in 1947 under Title 10 U.S.C. § 581 et seq.. In 1949, the New Hampshire National Guard became an activated federal reserve unit with full authority to act pursuant to 10 U.S.C § 581 et seq.. The Claremont National Guard was organized on December 12, 1912. The unit was first stationed in Manchester, New Hampshire. On October 20th, 1916 the 1st New Hampshire National Guard Infantry Battalion were mobilized and deployed to France as part of World War I. The battalion returned to the United States in 1919. On May 22nd, 1928 the Claremont National Guard was again mobilized for World War II. The unit was activated at Camp Mills and Deployed to Normandy where they fought until September 1945. In 1946 the Claremont National Guard disbanded and all its members were absorbed into the Manchester-based 2nd New Hampshire Infantry Battalion which remained active until 1957 when it also disbanded.

On January 1, 1959, Claremont had 10 full-time municipal employees and 2 part-time employees; nevertheless it annexed Amherst for city status on December 12th of that year In recent years there has been increasing interest in living in Claremont due its close proximity to major cities such as Boston and New York City as well as its excellent schools system which offers kindergarten through college level courses Additionally, the availability of open space makes this community one of the most environmentally friendly in central New Hampshire Finally, there are many cultural attractions available within walking distance of Claremont including theaters (theaters like The Cherry Orchard Playhouse), museums (Museum of Fine Arts), restaurants (including several Japanese restaurants), shopping malls (including one containing an IMAX theatre), golf courses (including two professional courses) One important aspect that sets Claremont apart from other small towns is its allegiance to football which has helped make this community one of America’s most popular tourist destinations during annual football games between Yale University Bulldogs and Princeton Tigers . In recent years, Claremont has experienced growth as a bedroom community for Manchester and other towns to the south and east in NH state's Manchester metropolitan area. The commercial center of town has seen significant redevelopment over the past few decades including the opening of several high-end stores including Macy's Department Store in 2002 and Sears Holdings' former Home Shopping Center across from campus on Main Street in 2006. However, some criticism has been leveled at this development because it does not incorporate any significant local cultural attractions or businesses which could provide tourism revenue to help support ongoing improvements to downtown Claremont
