The Concord Air Force Base was first established in 1941 as a United StatesAAF training base. It saw service in World War II as the main bomber and fighter base for New England. The present-day Concord AFB was opened in 1959 and soon became a major airbase for the USAF, hosting bombardment and fighter aircraft from all over the world. In 1967, the airport was renamed after General Curtis LeMay, who helped lead America's victory in the Battle of Okinawa. Since then, military activity at Concord has included Operation Neptune's Spear (1991), Desert Storm (1991), Gulf War I (1990) and II (1998). Today, Concord AFB is home to over 50 USAF wings and commands a wide range of operations including strategic bombardment; aerial refueling; maritime patrol; counterdrug patrols; disaster relief; search-and-rescue missions; intelligence gathering/analysis; weather observation/forecasting; airborne command post operations. The base offers civilians access to many of its facilities for educational purposes, such as an Aircraft Maintenance hangar on Johnson AFB which provides continuing education opportunities to thousands of airmen annually.
