The first European settlement in what is now Hillsborough County was made by Englishmen on July 5, 1624 when they landed at Concord Point on the Merrimac River and explored this region. Thesettlement grew quickly and by 1775 had reached a population of 1,000 people. By 1800 Concord had become an important cultural center due to its academies which focused on education for women and young men. In 1848 Concord became the site of one of the largest slave auctions ever held in America as it featured over 400 slaves from all over Northeastern Africa being offered for sale at auction. This event led to many protests against human trafficking throughout the remainder of 19th century until abolitionism began to gain ground in America during that time period. On May 25, 1861, while Abraham Lincoln was delivering his second inaugural address at Ford's Theatre in Washington D.C., a group of Confederate soldiers attempted unsuccessfully to storm into Concord and seize control of local government buildings before fleeing back out again later that night without accomplished their goal. This event helped spark American Civil War as many northern citizens felt embarrassed and humiliated by what they saw as southern treasonous behavior typical of those days leading up to war (although most northerners did not actually support Confederate causes). Aftermath of the civil war saw a large increase in crime rates in downtown Concord due to looted stores and desecrated property along with shortages resulting from food riots that took place throughout rural areas across New England following Union victory (prompting Lincoln to issue an executive order providing federal funding for food storage).
