The Dover, New Hampshire Volunteer Infantry was one of the first U.S. military units to be formed in 1775. The unit fought in the American Revolution and was disbanded in 1802. In 1921, the Dover Regiment Museum re-established the regiment as an infantry battalion and now operates as a museum of history and culture. In 1912, Dover's Mayor Harry Latham donated a machine gun to the army for use by the city's volunteer militia teamsters. This machine gun became known as "Latham's Rifle." The unit also received a rifle from Mayor George Waddell in 1932. The Army established artillery brigades in New Hampshire in 1917 and 1918, each composed of three regiments (1st, 2nd, 3rd). The 1st Brigade served with Major General John J. Pershing during World War I; it was disbanded after the war. In 1922, when Dover Regiment Museum opened its doors, it accepted an armorless cannon donated by Captain John Hoke Arnold ofthe Portsmouth Naval Militia that had been stored at Mansfield Armory since 1929. Captain John Hoke Arnold believed that such an important weapon should be displayed prominently within the museum so that Kentuckians could learn more about their Revolutionary ancestors who had fought on land bordering Massachusetts Bay Colony/New Hampshire/ Vermont/ Connecticut where they were called "Hancock's Rangers." Captain Hoke Arnold also believed that this Cannon would bring back some good memories for many people who may have forgotten all about this important part of our heritage!

Dover, New Hampshire is a town in Lincoln County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 1,895 at the 2010 census. Dover is part of the Manchester-by-the-Sea, NH Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Dover was John Farnham who arrived in 1768. He built a small cabin on the site of what is now known as Farnham's Mills and cleared land for farming. By 1800, twenty settlers had moved to Dover from locations throughout New Hampshire and Maine. The town's first store opened in 1801 and soon became an important commercial center for the surrounding area. Today, Dover remains one of the most vibrant communities within Lincoln County and its economy has been bolstered by its location within easy access to Interstate 93 and Interstate 623 as well as by its rich cultural heritage which includes several museums including the Dover Museum of Art and the Dana Farber Museum of Science & Technology. Dover history can be traced back to early Revolutionary War days when local patriots such as Captain Samuel Wilkinson fought against British forces during the Battle of Bunker Hill (1775). In 1778, Lieutenant Colonel George Washington appointed David Farnham acting justice of peace for Lancaster County after Joshua Frye was impeached following his role in providing support to Patriots during the Boston Tea Party. In recognition of this service, Farnam was awarded a silver certificate by President George Washington himself! A plaque honoring Lieutenant Colonel Washington can still be found on Old Main Street in downtown Dover commemorating this event. In 1802 Congress passed an act authorizing construction of a wharf on Portsmouth Harbor so that goods could be transported directly from America’s newly formed states without going throughBoston or Philadelphia. This major development led to increased trade with Europe which helped increase taxable income for both towns! Cotton production also flourished due to warm weather conditions which allowed plants to grow larger than normal; this gave rise to claims that “Dover was founded on cotton”! During World War II much activity took place at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard where thousands workers were employed building submarines, aircraft carriers and other warships Partly because shipbuilding played such an important role during wartime there were also many military veteran families who returned home and started businesses in their new installations After hostilities ended many veterans decided it would be best if they left their post-war social security benefits behind They established numerous businesses throughout central NH selling items like hardware stores appliances etc., but some chose instead To stay put And continue working For their Doomed Country
