In 1812 Major General Nathaniel Wakefield founded Congress Village which became an important center of trade for both NH and VT during the American Revolution In 1828 Drury Lane Academy was chartered as one of four academies for women in America; it became one of three colleges that remain today (the others being Wellesley College and Harvard University). In 1872 KEENE TOWNSHIP was organized by act of the NH legislature out of part of Congress Village following a referendum held there that year to commemorate 50 years since Vermont Annexation into NH In 1886 KEENE COUNCIL formed when Concordia Church withdrew its affiliation with Harvard Seminary to become an independent institution The merger resulted in Keene becoming Mayoralty Borough with Borough Council members elected at-large . On November 3rd 1922 KEENE THEATRE opened its doors for business replacing Union Chapel which had been closed due to lack of patronage . To this day it remains one of only two theaters open within city limits serving both cities and town . From 1889 through 1912 KEENE WEDDINGS were conducted at Netherland's Elmira Hall until such time as Congregationalist Minister Samuel Morse located a new home for ceremonies in Northampton ; thereafter they were conducted at Mrs Potter's store until 1915 when finally moved to her house on Main Street where they continue to be held today After more than 150 years as an agricultural communityKeene has become more diversified over that time including manufacturing , service sector jobs , retail businesses and professional services

The first Europeans to visit Keene were French traders and missionaries in 1609 who landed on the east coast of North America and named it "New France." In 1764, Englishman John Bowdoin founded a trading post near the present-day town. The first post office was established in 1814. In 1916, Keene became a city when its citizens voted to annex part of Manchester. In 1928, Keene annexed the towns of Arlington and Epsom which had been adjacent to it since 1921. On July 11th, 1934 Keene's City Council enacted Resolution No. 5 which designated May Day as "National Memorial Day" in commemoration of all Americans who have died in World War I or World War II
