In 1914, Colgate-Palmolive Company opened its first office in Keene and began selling toothpaste and other products under the name Palmolive Coffee. In 1916, they moved their headquarters to 204 Main Street after purchasing The Grosvenor House Coffee Shop from Colonel Thomas G. Higginson for $2,500. They continued to sell coffee until 1957 when they merged with Roquefort SA to form multinational Roquefort SA Incorporated (later known as Nestle). Today, Keene is home to two main coffee companies: Nestle Roquefort SA (Nestle) and Peet's Coffee & Tea Co., which operates the oldest continuously operating café in New England at 328 Main Street. Additionally, several independent cafes also serve local cuisine from small batches of roasted beans found throughout the city’s neighborhoods—a unique experience not typically available at most convenience stores or cafés serving prepackaged goods like pop tarts or soft drinks.

Keene is a town in New Hampshire, United States. The population was 10,721 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Manchester-by-the-Sea–South Hadley–New Bedford Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Keene was John Keene, who arrived in 1638 and built a cabin on the east bank of the Merrimack River. The town began to form around 1800 when various farmers, traders and soldiers moved into the area from other parts of New England. By 1823, Keene had a public school and two churches. In 1841, Joseph Gurney laid out an agricultural township which became Keene Township in 1854. In 1865, during the American Civil War, General Alfred Manges’s 3rd Brigade invaded New Hampshire and encountered Union forces near present-day Keene. After a skirmish that left 10 men dead or wounded on Mount Hope Hill (now known as Gurney Drive), General Manges ordered his brigade commander to withdraw to Concord due to lack of supplies. This event is often considered one of the turning points in the war for New Hampshire since it demonstrated how important strategic location was for both sides in their conflict with each other: As Yankee reinforcements withdrew towards Concord instead of advancing further into enemy territory, they were able to send reinforcements back across Lake Winnipesaukee under cover of darkness so as not to alarm their opponents – something that would become increasingly difficult as time passed and armies grew larger
