In 1812 Laconia became a town under the laws of New Hampshire. On January 11, 1861, it was renamed for General Nathaniel Lyon when its rail connection with Manchester was completed. The town's economy has been based largely on agriculture since its earliest days. Today some of the town's most important industries include cheese production (the largest producer in New England), poultry farming, and textiles manufacturing. A number of small businesses have also sprung up around these activities to support them; some examples are a bakery and ice cream parlor, a pet store, and a post office that opened in 1912. The current Post Office building was built in 1909. The largest employer in Laconia is the Town of Manchester which employs over 350 people as of 2018. Other employers include the NH Department of Transportation,NH State Police, NH School District No. 1, and several farms and businesses including two wineries and one grocery store. In 1802, Laconia became the second town in New Hampshire to be organized. It prospered until 1824, when a severe storm caused extensive damage to the town. In 1827, Laconia became the capital of New Hampshire. The first governor of New Hampshire, James Kettledon, was born here in 1827.
