Laconia is a town in Hampshire County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 728 at the 2010 census. Laconia was first settled by English colonists in 1724. It became a town in 1825. The name of the town comes from the Greek word "lachon" meaning "a stream." The first settler in Laconia was John Prentice, who arrived with his family in 1724. He built a log cabin on what is now Main Street. In 1727, John's son GeorgePrentice married Rebecca Norton and they began to farm around the bend on Route 9 south of Laconia. Their children would grow up here and learn about their father's pioneer life and land holdings while also learning about their ancestry which included people from England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland as well as Native Americans who had been living here for many years before European settlement started. In 1825, the town of Manchester merged with Laconia to form a new town government under the leadership of Mayor-elect Samuel Cushing. The merger came about because residents wanted an easier time getting along together since they were all small towns with different ordinances and regulations that differed from one another. One of the main reasons for merging was to get more money for infrastructure projects such as roads and schools that needed repairs or expansions due to increasing population size and growth throughout New Hampshire during this time period. Another reason may have been because there were too few qualified candidates available to take over some positions when mayor-elect Samuel Cushing resigned after only one year onto his term due to health concerns related to alcoholism which had become an issue among some citizens at this point in history . As soon as Samuel Cushing left office, he was succeeded by Joseph Addison who served two terms before retiring effective December 1st, 1830 citing age 84 years old as the cause behind his decision not run for reelectionthat year due to health reasons also related to alcoholism however he continued living in Laconia until his death on October 3rd 1834 at age 88 years old
