Laconia is a town in Hampshire County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 7,043 at the 2010 census. Laconia is part of the Manchester, NH Metropolitan Statistical Area. Laconia was founded by George Washington and his family in 1765 as a small trading post on the Monadnock River. It became a town in 1803 and remained so until 1959 when it became an incorporated village. Laconia's first mayor was John Greenough and its first justice of the peace was Gideon Welles. The settlement grew rapidly due to its location near the new Transcontinental Railroad and other economic opportunities; by 1835, Laconia had a store, three blacksmiths, four farmers, twenty-one slaves, twelve houses and two churches. By 1880, the population had reached 1,500 people and by 1910 it had grown to 7,043 people with 581 businesses in operation. Today Laconia is one of New Hampshire's most vibrant towns with centuries-old architecture and thriving businesses that continue to contribute to its economy today
