The modern era for coast guard service began with the establishment of marine units in 1944 under command of Captain John Ahern who served until his retirement in 1951 Captain Harry Coyle took over from Captains Ahern and Coyle served until his retirement in 1959 Captain John McCarthy led Unit 1 during Operation Neptune's Spear which destroyed Saddam Hussein's military forces near Tikrit on April 8th 1988 . Captain McCarthy was awarded numerous awards including Distinguished Service Cross (DSC) for this accomplishment

Lebanon, New Hampshire is a small town located in central New Hampshire. The population was 5,439 at the 2000 census. It is the second most populous town in New Hampshire and one of the smallest towns by area. The town is named after Mount Lebanon, a mountain in Jerusalem. The first permanent settler in what would become Lebanon was James Aspinwall, who arrived in 1768. He built a cabin on an eminence near the present day junction of NH Route 3 and NH 6A. Aspinwall's descendants continued to live there until 1802 when they sold their holdings to Nathaniel Gorham who created Gorham Township out of part of village of Lebanon. In 1827, Gorham ceded his township to John Greenough with permission from then-Governor Lyman Trumbull for the purpose of forming a new city or town within that territory. The city was organized on July 1st, 1830 under Governor Trumbull as Manchester (later Manchester) City and it became one of the five cities that made up Hartford County, Connecticut during its creation in 1833.Manchester City prospered until 1840 when settlers began moving into what would become Lebanon and other rural areas around it because of cheap land availability following the American Civil War; prices had plummeted due to war-time restrictions on trade between nations and economies were far different than they are today). By 1860, only 2% of Manchester City's population lived within its borders while 60% resided elsewhere within Hartford County
