The Manchester, New Hampshire Army National Guard has been deployed in support of various missions for the past several years. On December 11, 1917 the Manchester Evening News reported that the first American Expeditionary Forces had arrived in New Hampshire. The regiment was then known as the 1st Battalion, 5th Regiment of Massachusetts Infantry. On January 8, 1918 they were redesignated as the Manchester Regiment and were assigned to the 2nd Brigade of the 9th Division. They fought in France and Belgium until September 1918 when they returned home. The regiment lost two officers and twenty-four men killed in action; four officers and ninety-six men captured or missing in action; one officer and thirteen enlisted men died of disease.
Manchester, New Hampshire is a town in the eastern part of New Hampshire. The population was 7,869 at the 2010 census. Manchester is one of the nine towns that make up the Manchester-Haverhill Micropolitan Statistical Area, which had a population of 17,711 as of 2015. The name "Manchester" means "settlement by man." The first settlement in what is now Manchester was made on an arm of Long Island Sound by three brothers—Nicholas, John and Richard Manlius—in 1624. They named their new community after their father's home town in England: Mannheim. It was not until 1825 that the name Manchester became official when it was chosen to replace Haverhill as the county seat for Hillsborough County, New Hampshire. The early days of Manchester were marked by many struggles. In 1798, during the American Revolution, British forces burned down part of downtown and looted many businesses before withdrawing from town just two weeks later. In 1827, another large fire broke out in downtown; this time it did not spread to other parts of town and only consumed several buildings in central business district (CBD). This event helped start what would become known as "the Downtown Development Movement." After years of struggle and effort by citizens and local officials alike, Manchester became one of America's most thriving Metropolises thanks to its ambitious infrastructure development plans – including construction of a network of roads and bridges connecting downtown with other parts of the city center; creation or enlargementof several parks; and continued development along routes such as King Street into century-old warehouses that still line both sides thereof today! But despite all these successes – some dating back to before America's founding – things started to unravel starting in around 1920 when multiple fires ravaged sections of downtown again throughout 1922-1923 season alone! By 1925–26 all but one building had been destroyed within blocks radius surrounding City Hall (now known as First Unitarian Church) with an estimated loss for local businesses totaling $5 million! With businesses struggling to keep up with rising housing prices and energy costs following World War II,[6] much progress had been lost over time due to economic stagnation caused by changes within our country itself rather than external factors such as war or recession.[7] However there were some positive moments during this difficult period including establishment in 1951[8]of The University Of Massachusetts Medical School at Hospital Campus adjacent to then-central business district (CBD).[9][10][11] And finallyDuring Governor Mario Cuomo’s administration in 2002[12], land southward from First Unitarian Church site on Main Street between Market Street/Ayers Avenue and State Street/First Avenue [13][14][15]was purchased for use as a mixed-use redevelopment area called “The Core” that currently houses more than 100 small businesses employing nearly 1,000 people across 10 different sectors who generate almost $200 million annually economic activity within its boundaries!
