Manchester, New Hampshire is a town in Hampshire County, New England. The population was 10,593 at the 2010 census. Manchester is the county seat of Hampshire County. It is part of the Portsmouth-Worchester Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was first settled in 1710 by English colonists from Northampton, who named it "Manhasset". The original settlers were Puritans and their families who left England for religious reasons in 1692. They arrived on horseback and built their homes around a square mile (1 km2) with plowed fields as its centerpiece. After years of growth, the square mile became too small and they laid out streets near Meeting House Hill to make it more urban-like. In 1802, the town voted to adopt a constitution that provided for an executive magistrate and judiciary system as well as limits on property ownership and business activity. In 1847, Norwich railroad workers began construction of the First National Road which led directly to Manchester through its center; this opened up much of what Manchester has today including some dense commercial areas that would not have been accessible without the railroad's presence. The area now known as downtown Manchester was developed primarily during World War II with large military installations such as Fort Monmouth being built there or nearby including Camp David and Windsor Castle among others while other portions were developed into residential neighborhoods such as Arlington Heights and Oakhurst Crossing which are still predominant today despite many changes over time due to war use or suburbanization elsewhere within NH . Manchester, New Hampshire is a town in northern New Hampshire, United States. The population was 9,844 at the 2010 census. Manchester is the county seat of Manchester County. Manchester was first settled by English colonists in 1634 as part of the Plymouth Colony. The town was chartered on February 14, 1794 and incorporated as a city on November 3, 1856. It became a state capital in 1912 and has since been called "the most important city in New Hampshire." In 2002, Manchester was named one of the "Most Liveable Cities" in America by Forbes magazine. The history of Manchester dates back to its founding as part of Plymouth Colony over 350 years ago. At that time it was known as an agricultural village controlled by members of the local Puritan church. In 1635-36, when King Philip's War broke out between England and Spain, many people from Plymouth came to fight for England because they saw no other way out for their loved ones and families. Among these early settlers were John Winthrop (1630-1700), Increase Mather (1645-1723), his son Cotton Mather (1698-1774) and others who would later form what is now Manchester's famously rich Mather family business dynasty including Cotton Mather Jr., James Dana Howland (18th century), Ebenezer Scudder (1854-1924) and Amos Stuyvesant (1596-1666). In 1794, when Manchester became a city after being chartered by act of Congress under then Mayor Isaac Brockett,[1] it had a population of only 1,500 people but quickly grew into one of New Hampshire's largest cities with more than 10% of the state's population living there during its peak; according to some reports up to 25% or more of all men working in manufacturing were located within two miles radius of downtown.[2] By 1800 there were over 30 churches located throughout downtown while also housing around 100 taverns and 300 stores which supported both local farmers and those coming down from Boston looking for new opportunities in this rapidly developing region[3]. The growth continued through the 19th century with dramatic increases thanks largely to railroad construction which linked downtown with larger towns such as Lowell to provide goods nationally recognized manufacturers with access to raw materials unavailable from closer away - something that continues today even though transportation has become much more seamless across states highway systems
