Manchester, New Hampshire is a town in central New Hampshire, United States. The population was 10,715 at the 2010 census. Manchester is the county seat of Manchester County and home to the University of New Hampshire and several other small towns. The name Manchester may be derived from an early Native American settlement called Manasseh which stood on an ancient site near present-day Manchester. The area that would become Manchester was first settled by people who arrived in what is now New Hampshire during the late 18th century. One of these early settlers, Richard Stockbridge, named his community after his birthplace of Mannheim, Germany. By 1800, many families had moved to this area and built homes around a small pond located north of town on State Road 9. In 1824, General John Stark founded Stark's Mills in what is now downtown Manchester and began manufacturing goods for local markets. This industry continued until the 1870s when it was replaced by mills run by farmers in neighboring towns such as Dover and Lebanon. In 1792, three men who had followed Reverend George Washington on his tour of America met at an inn in this town to discuss forming a new religious society known as the Independent Baptists. They later changed their name to Congregationalists because they were not content with being just a Baptist church organization. In 1802–03, Methodist Episcopal Bishop Samuel Morse visited Manchester during his journey across central New England and recommended that this congregation be chartered so that it could missionaryize its members into other parts of the United States. On July 3rd, 1804 (the day before Independence Day), Congregationalist pastors James Dolan and John Cashin organized a group of about 50 men to purchase land southeast of town fortanization). That same year (1804), Manchester became part of Granite Valley Province under Anglican Archbishop Lorton Beecher Jr..
