In 1824, Portsmouth became an incorporated city and began to industrialize. By 1850, it had become one of the most important manufacturing centers in New England. However, during World War II, Portsmouth's economy declined as munitions production shifted to nearby Manchester and other towns. However, since the late 1990s, Portsmouth has regained some of its former prominence as a center for arts and media industry. The history of coffee is intertwined with that of Portsmouth itself: both were founded around 1795 as Loyalist settlements after fleeing British rule in Boston during the revolutionary period (1789-1793). It is the smallest of the towns in Portsmouth County and has the lowest population density of any town in New Hampshire. The first settlement in Portsmouth was made on December 12, 1634 by Captain John Smith and his men as they left for their attack on Thoresby'srebbe (now part of Salem). At that time there was only a single house in town. In 1792 Portsmouth became the seat of county government when it was moved from Manchester to Portsmouth. The first courthouse was built in 1801 and courthouse square is still home to many local businesses today. Portsmouth Naval Shipyard closed its doors on July 1, 1954 after over 50 years of service with USS " Constitution" and USS " Perry". After that day no new military vessels were constructed at the shipyard; all classes of warships were converted or scrapped here until 1973 when construction began on USS " Enterprise". That ship remains one of only two American warships ever designed and built specifically for Japanese naval use (the other being HMS " Warrior"). In 1957-58 Broadway Street was widened to four lanes for an expressway project which bypassed downtown Portsmouth entirely. The widening eliminated much of downtown business district including most of the mercantile sector which had been characteristically centered around Market Square since colonial times. However, this development also helped make downtown more accessible than it had been before while preserving some important historic buildings such as merchants' houses on High Street between Meetinghouse Row and Broadwalk Avenue. During the early 21st century several large developments took place along Route 6A northward from downtown: First Trust Bank relocated from Manchester into a new $225 million building across Route 6A from Interstate 95 just south of Exit 11 (renaming it references to historical events), followed by Apple Inc.'s initial investment into what would become One Franklin Place – later renamed Fifth Third Center – with office space totaling 495,000 sq ft (40 acres) occupying two blocks bounded by Kingsbury Road east/west and Broadway westerly/southerly; then Jardine Matheson announced plans to build a massive shopping center comprising 2 million sq ft (~100 acres) adjacent to I- 95 exit 5b northwest across kingsbury Rd.– rechristening it Randolph Plaza– finally demolished King's College——all within short distance Frustration Over Lack Of Development Near Downtown Prescott
