Volunteers from the Portsmouth National Guard have been providing services to the community for many years. The guard has a rich history in New Hampshire, with contributions made by men and women who have chosen to serve. The Portsmouth National Guard was organized on November 1, 1775, during the American Revolution. It was one of 149 volunteer militias that fought in the war. The guard saw action at Saratoga and Yorktown as part of the Continental Army. Since its inception, the Portsmouth National Guard has donated more than 5,000 items to local charities and schools across town. These donations include military equipment, uniforms, tools and supplies, furniture and appliances. In addition to serving our community positively through donations, the Portsmouth National Guard also provides support to local law enforcement officers during emergencies or special events. The Portsmouth National Guard was founded on November 15, 1861. It has been in service since then, and is today one of the most veteran-based militias in the United States. The guard's first unit was organized on December 12, 1861.
Portsmouth, New Hampshire is a town in Hampshire County, New England, United States. The population was 5,243 at the 2010 census. Portsmouth is part of the Manchester–by-the-Sea Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent European settlers in Portsmouth were Congregationalists from Saybrook Colony in Connecticut on September 10, 1692. In 1765, Portsmouth's first school was opened by Reverend Jonathan Edwards with nine students and three teachers. Portsmouth soon became an important whaling port due to its location between two major shipping routes and its close proximity to Boston. The town's growth during the 18th century was spurred by its strategic location on the Strait of Hormuz and its easy access to transportation via horseback or wagon train along Route 9 (now Interstate 95). During the American Revolution, Navy Commodore John Rodgers launched his Bayonne Expedition against British forces at Hampton Roads on December 7, 1775. Commodore Rodgers' force consisted of over 500 men under his command including 11 cannons which he had transported across Long Island Sound from Weymouthport on Cape Cod to Hampton Roads under cover of night. After weeks of hard fighting they finally emerged victorious and captured HMS "Prince" which they fitted out as a warship and sailed back home with 16 prizes total: six frigates (four warships), four transports (two ships each), one sloop (a small vessel) and one schooner (a small ship). Although most people began moving away from Portsmouth during the 1800s as manufacturing activity diminished in Rhode Island after Confederation, many residents remained until recently due to their strong connections to the community through family relationships and social activities such as cricket clubs, choir groups and patriotic balls given throughout fall/winter months in memory of those who have passed away since then – many notably Grover Cleveland’s great grandson Daniel Hinton Cleveland Sr., also known as “Duke” for his work at Chrysler Corporation; local historian Driscoll Goodman; current Mayor Steve Marchand; plus numerous other descendants of early residents like Harry Carney Jr., Edwin Maynard Keyes II etc.; some dating back centuries even like Samuel Morse Sr., inventor of Morse Code
The National Guard has been a part of the United States since 1775. The Guard was created to provide law and order in times of civil unrest. It is also responsible for protecting the nation's borders, infrastructure, and vital interests. Some of the first gifts given to the Guard were uniforms and equipment. From then on, it was common for national guard members to receive donation items such as guns, ammunition, or tools. Then came motor vehicles- many of which are still in use today by the Guard. In 1933, Secretary of War Franklin D. Roosevelt offered $5 million for the purchase of 1,000 trucks and trailers specifically for use by the National Guard. This gift substantially increased the capabilities of our military and helped to improve troop morale. Throughout its history, the National Guard has played an important role in American history- from guarding our borders to providing support during wartime efforts.
The National Guard was originally organized as a militia in 1792. The military arm of the government, it functioned as an auxiliary force for the local militias until 1876. The National Guard Act of 1898 created a permanent National Guard and gave it full military status. In 1932, the President issued Executive Order 9106 which called for all states to establish guard units within their state militias to supplement their regular police forces. This order made the National Guard an integral part of the national security apparatus and caffeineough not subject to state laws, its officers were answerable only to the Federal Government.

Portsmouth was founded in 1625 by the Rhode Island colonists as a trading post on the Portsmouth River. The town was named for Portsmouth, England, which at that time was the most important English city. In 1797, during the American Revolution, Portsmouth sided with the British Crown and supported the war effort. After the Revolution, many of the original colonists returned to Britain and Portsmouth became an Englishtown. In 1933, it became an incorporated city.
