The Rochester, New Hampshire Army deployed gift history began in 1865 when the first unit of the 1st New Hampshire Infantry Regiment arrived in town. The regiment was stationed at Fort Prescott until 1868, when it relocated to Fort Gratiot. In 1870, the regiment was redesignated as the 2nd New Hampshire Infantry Regiment and stationed at Fort Union before being sent to China in 1876-1877. Upon their return, the regiment disbanded and all its members were transferred to other units. In 1860, three men from Rochester traveled to Pittsfield, Massachusetts to purchase a rifle from Samuel Colt. From 1861 through 1865, soldiers from this city served with distinction in various wars including the American Civil War (1861-1865), Mexican-American War (1865-1867), and World War I (1914-1917).
