The United States Navy deployed a gift to the town of Rochester, New Hampshire in 1862. This gift was a steamer called the USS Constitution. The Constitution was donated by Commodore John Rodgers and built at Portsmouth, NH. The ship served as part of the American Expeditionary Force in World War 1 and II. It is now museum property in Rochester. Rochester has a rich naval history dating back to 1778 when Commodore John Rodgers donated his USS Constitution to the town for use as a public library vessel. In 1868, the town leased the ship fromthe navy for $1 per year. From 1898-1902, Rochester used her as an auxiliary buoy tender for operations during the Spanish-American War. After World War I, she served as flagship of cruiser squadron 5 at Guantanamo Bay Cuba until 1922 when she returned home onshore and decommissioned there ever again. In 1962, while still stationed at Guantanamo Bay Cuba, USS Constitution Museum Foundation decided it would be fun if we sent her down to New Hampshire with some gifts for people in our community! We bought her new condition restorationComplete with all new rigging and power plant! She arrived November 15th 1962 and spent Christmas Day anchored off Portsmouth harbor providing entertainment for many locals and tourists alike! On Boxing day 1963 we took her out into open water once again for a public show! She eventually spent Thanksgiving Day anchororing off North Hero beach just south of downtown Rochester giving tours every chance she got! She finally retired from service in 2001 after more than fifty years patrolming our waters!. In that time she has given over 5000 tours throughout New England’s coastal communities!

The NHC-4 served as a unit of Helicopter Maritime Strike Group 3 duringOperation Iraqi Freedom and later participated in operations against members of Al Qaeda in Afghanistan. In 2006, the NHC-4 underwent an overhaul and returned to service with Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron 11 onboard USS George Washington (CG-12). The NHC-4 participated in exercises off Japan and Bahrain before returning to Rochester for final preparations for her next deployment – this time serving as a unit of Helicopter Combat Squadron 10.

The site of Rochester was chosen as the capital of New England by English colonists in 1664 because it offered easy access to water resources and its location on Lake Ontario made it an attractive target forattack from Native Americans. The first humans to live here were nomadic hunter-gatherers who traveled through this area during the ice age. In 985 AD, settlers arrived from England with a group of Christian monks under the leadership of St. John de la Salle. The monks built a small community on what is now Main Street known as "Rochester Cathedral." They named their settlement after Pope Nicholas V's order that all new towns should be called "Novo Scotia" (New Scotland). During much of colonial times, other than occasional skirmishes with Native American peoples, life in Rochester was peaceful and uneventful. However, there were several incidents which led to increased tensions between European colonists and Native Americans: In 1668–1669,Sir William Johnson led a force against Chief Josephacombe after Johnson heard rumors that he had killed Indian women and children; In 1705–1706, British forces burned down part of downtown Rochester while looting Indian village; In 1713–1714, rebels from New Britain ambushed an English convoy traveling along the Great Lakes; In 1745–1746 two smallpox epidemics swept across central New England; and finally in 1803 when British forces burned down buildings throughout town following victory over France at Yorktown
