The United States Air Force has a rich history in Somersworth, New Hampshire. The USAF began its presence in the town in 1942 when it activated the 6th Bomb Wing here. This unit was part of then-North American Aviation’s (NAA) Flying Fortresses program and flew Boeing B-29 bombers. In 1957, the USAFactivated stationed at Tyndall AFB, Florida, which would become one of America’s most important airfields during the Cold War. The 569th Troop Carrier Wing moved to Tyndall AFB from RAF Mildenhall in England in 1957. With this change came a new era for theAAF here as Air National Guard units were activated and assignments were made to support military deployments around the world. In 1969, Air National Guard unit 173d Fighter Group was activated at Somersworth Municipal Airport and assigned to Northeast Regional Command (NORC). At that time NORC formed what is now known as Air Combat Command (ACC). From then on, ACC would be responsible for all combat airspace over New England and Canada within its area of responsibility. In 1999, ACC was disbanded and its assets reassigned to Air Education & Training Command (AETC). However, AETC retains jurisdiction over all combat airspace over New England and Canada within their area of responsibility today. Today there are more than 1,000 active duty USAF fighter units located throughout New England region with an additional 350 ANG Unit stationed worldwide across 66 countries! Additionally there are numerous Reserve components including The Maine National Guard's 413th Airlift Wing flying C-130Js/PJs; Vermont ANG's 485th Airlift Squadron flying Cessna 182s/190s; Rhode Island ANG's 388th Airlift Squadron flying Beechcraft 1900Ds; Massachusetts ANG's 131st Rescue Squadron providing aerial refueling support for bombers; Connecticut ANG's 134th Rescue Squadron providing tanker airlift services for Navy ships operating off Long Island Sound); Pennsylvania ANG's 143rd Rescue Wing providing long range patrol flights along US borders - these wings provide vital logistics capabilities while also training our nation’s next generation aviators

In 1892, during one of New Hampshire's most dramatic civic changes, Somersworth became the only municipality within Manchester Township (formerly Manchester County) to become independent when it seceded from that township over differences about public works programs favored by then–Mayor David Ziegler (D).
