Somersworth is a town in New Hampshire, United States. The population was 8,853 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Manchester-by-the-Sea, NH Micropolitan Statistical Area. Somersworth is one of the oldest towns in New Hampshire and has been inhabited since 1624. The town was chartered on October 15, 1781 by George Washington and James Bowdoin, both Revolutionary War veterans. Somersworth's first settler was Moses Farnsworth who homesteaded land north of present day Main Street and east of what are now Park Street and School Road. The first post office in Somersworth opened on December 12, 1812. In 1863, John Fenton built a sawmill at present day Main Street near his home for the flour trade which continued until 1865 when production ended because of Civil War hostilities. In 1865–66 an Experiment Station was established at Church Hill to study methods for water supply control improvements forManchester and other villages located along the Merrimack River Valley. Although it did not achieve success it helped lay the groundwork for later hydropower development in New England In 1871, Edward Ayer purchased a lot on what is now High Point Road from Amos Griggs to build a large frame house called “Ayer’s Grove” which still stands today near corner of High Point Road & Park Boulevard (now Elmira Road). The Ayer family ran this farm until 1984 when it reverted back to private ownership following passage of the Townshend Charitable Trust Act Amendments (1986). Somersworth is a town in Hampshire County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. Somersworth has one primary school and three small businesses. It lies on the border of Goffstown to the east and Amherst to the west. The first settlement in what is now Somersworth was made by Captain John Day in 1768 after he arrived in what is now NH from Canada. He named his land "Somersworth" after his hometown of Somersetshire, England. In 1802, Stephen Fenton built a home here which he called "Fenton's Farm". In 1803, Governor John Adams commissioned Peterborough lawyer James Kempton to write a report on becoming a state within NH. His report recommended thatNH become an independent republic with its own government with representation through districts or precincts instead of individual townships or counties. On July 2, 1803, NH became an independent republic with Kempton as its first governor. At this time there were only six townships in NH: Goffstown (now Amherst), Don Valley (now North Conway), East Hampton (now Enfield), Grantham (now Hadley), Laconia (now Lancaster) and Somersworth (later renamed Westborough). Kempton's report also recommended that each township have two elected members for a total of twenty-four members who would be apportioned among the six townships based on population size and economic development potential rather than based on property values or electoral votes alone as was done currently. This change would have had a significant impact on rural voting patterns and would later lead to the creation of many small villages across NH. In 1834, trustees created the first high school inNH when they voted to establish it at what is now Manchester High School as part of their plan to improve education opportunities for all citizens regardless of social class or wealth status within NH society at that time. This began what would remain as one of NJ's most successful high schools until it closed its doors in 1970 due primarily to budget cuts which led to deep student deficits throughout much of its history despite efforts by several successive administrations over many years to address these problems including but not limited to direct funding from Congress during both World Wars II and since then via various appropriations Acts passed by Congress including ones introduced by Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney during his campaign season last year In 1934 public school students who attended private academies were allowed free tuition under state law while private academies continued tuition rates at face value so long as these institutions did not offer any academic programs beyond basic learning skills such as reading, writing & arithmetic; however this policy changed following President Franklin D Roosevelt's administration when he decided that all public school students should receive free tuition regardless whether they attended private academies providing those academies offered no more than basic academic programs beyond basic learning skills whereas private academies continuing tuition rates at face value must provide program specific instruction above & beyond basics).
