In 1942 General Douglas MacArthur ordered U2 aerial bombings against Japan using William Boyer's "Eagle" airplane which destroyed two Japanese military installations at Carlsbad while causing severe damage to other buildings nearby; this event is also often cited as one of the most significant feats accomplished during World War II. In 1957 a shopping mall were built in downtown Carlsbad by Socorro Development Corporation which anchored by JCPenney & Co.; it opened in 1959 and closed in 1990 after unsuccessful attempts at renovating it over time with no success. The mall was replaced by a new shopping center that opened in 2001 known as North Park Plaza Mall which anchors Wal-Mart Super Markets along with Sears stores from what was once Socorro Development Corporation's original site across from where North Park Plaza now stands (the old Sears building still remains vacant).
