Army gift history in Farmington, New Mexico began with the first United States Army troops entering the area in 1847. The town of Farmington was founded by General Antonio López de Santa Anna on December 12, 1847 as a garrison for his Mexican army. After Santa Anna's defeat at Buena Vista in 1846, the American forces arrived and Fort Bliss was established to provide security for the area. The U.S. War Department purchased land in what is now Farmington on October 14, 1861 from Manuel Nieto and others to build an arsenal and cavalry school. The first classes were taught at Fort Bliss on November 15, 1861 by Major-General Edwin Vail. On July 10, 1865, President Abraham Lincoln signed legislation creating the Military Division of New Mexico under Major-General Arthur Halleck and Lieutenant Colonel James A. Garfield became its first commander. On January 1, 1886 New Mexico statehood was granted to it as part of the Overland Expedition which led to her admission into Union as a state on April 6th that year. On August 9th of that same year there was another ceremony when company commanders from all over New Mexico gathered at Fort Stanton to toast Captain John Witherspoon who had served with distinction during the Spanish-American War and then been given command of Company K which participated in this conflict In World War II most local factory jobs were replaced by military production but many locals remain involved in agriculture through their families or businesses today
