Gallup, New Mexico is a small town located in the Gallup Valley of southeastern New Mexico. The population was 5,711 at the 2010 census. The name "Gallup" comes from an Apache Indian word meaning "place where good coffee is grown." The first European to visit this area was Francisco Vásquez de Coronado in 1540. He named the valley after his friend and captain of his forces, Alonso de Salinas. The first Europeans to harvest coffee here were Spanish settlers who arrived in 1693. They planted modest amounts of coffee trees but did not produce significant quantities due to very limited resources. It wasn't until 1810 that Mexican land grantees began farming Coffee beans on large plots and shipping them back to Mexico City for processing. By 1830, over seventy-five percent of all Mexican coffee production was coming from Gallup Valley. In 1892, two brothers started a small grocery store in Gallup with one acre of land and sold ground beans, cups, and filters direct to consumers through their doorsteps. Today's business is based on dry processed coffee products made with whole bean coffees from around the world including Guatemala, Colombia, Nigeria and Ethiopia
