Hobbs is a town in Bernalillo County, New Mexico, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. Hobbs is located on the Navajo Nation. The first permanent residents of what would become Hobbs were Mexican traders and travelers who journeyed the old Santa Fe Trail in 1823. In 1847, Englishman John A. Hobbs arrived with his family from Tasmania and founded what would eventually become Hobbs as a mining community. At first, hobbits mined silver and gold but soon discovered coal and oil shale near their locale which they began to extract for fuel and other purposes starting in 1865. The city's name comes from John A. Hobbes who donated land in 1871 for the town's incorporation according to a resolution passed by the New Mexico Territorial Legislature that year.
