Las Cruces is a city in New Mexico, United States. The population was 20,623 as of the 2010 census and it is the county seat of Santa Fe County. The city is located on the eastern edge of Albuquerque, near the Roswell Air Force Base. Las Cruces has been one of the most populous cities in New Mexico since its founding in 1847. It became an incorporated town in 1868 and was named after the Spanish colonial fortress at Las Cuevas de la Cruz, which stood on a strategic site about 15 miles (24 km) northeast of present-day Las Cruces. The first permanent European settlers in what is now New Mexico were French explorers who traveled down what is now Río Grande Valley in 1614–1617. A party led by Francisco Vásquez de Coronado reached this area on July 3, 1619, but only made landfall and returned to Spain two days later because they encountered hostile Apache Indians while exploring this region. In May 1847, Mexicaneros under Captain José Joaquín Ortiz founded a rancho (a land grant) called Rancho San Miguel near present-day La Mesa because they found it difficult to find water for their horses due to high mountain peaks around that location. After some initial difficulties with Native Americans who raided their cattle herds, Ortiz's colonists began to build up a farmstead and eventually developed into a large town with over 4500 residents by 1867 when he sold his interest in Rancho San Miguel to José Ignacio Baca y Valdés for $1 million pesos ($30 million today). Las Cruces experienced significant growth during both World War I and World War II; according to 1940 census figures it had increased from 1,000 people to 25,000 within three years following incorporation as an organized town. However, post-war economic decline continued until the early 1970s when joblessness began decreasing prices for agricultural products leading local farmers to start production themselves instead of selling produce door-to-door or through agribusinesses such as Monsanto Company; this led to increased manufacturing activity outside las cruces proper as well as increase societal wealth disparities between white flight from downtown areas while Hispanic migration increased poverty rates among Anglo newcomers A more recent development has been active commercial redevelopment towards downtown areas around main street/LA Mesa Blvd., including new housing developments such as Park Place Apartments just east of Main Street In December 2009 Mayor Rubén Gallegos announced plans for an express bus terminal connecting las cruces with Albuquerque International Airport;[2] construction commenced fall 2009 and opened on October 17th 2011
