The Marine Corps deployed gift history in Las Cruces, New Mexico on Veterans Day of 1918. The Marines from the 1st Battalion, 9th Marines had been mobilized for World War I and were quartered at the Ft. Worth Training Center in Texas. On November 8, 1918, they arrived in New Mexico to relieve the garrison at Las Cruces. The battalion was stationed at Camp Bowie for a few weeks before moving to Fort Bliss near El Paso on November 12 where it relieved the 2nd Battalion, 25th Infantry Regiment. On December 5, 1918, the battalion moved again when it became part of III Corps under General John J Pershing which was sent to fight in Belize and Honduras. In January 1919 the battalion disembarked at Guantanamo Bay Cuba where it remained until September 1920 when it returned home via Miami Beach Florida and San Diego California. It re-deployed to Quantico Virginia Maryland in October 1921 as part of VII Corps under General Bernard Law who was leading America into World War II. In 1942 the battalion re-deployed once again as part of IXMC which was attached to VIII Amphibious Corps in North Africa during Operation Torch which led to victory over Nazi Germany. After liberation from North Africa on April 10 1945 by UDT 6093 “Dolphin” unit including elements of 3/9 Marines (the "Lance corporal's" outfit) embarked with USS Pueblo (AO-10) into Turkish Harbor off Istanbul Deputy Admiral Kemal Atatürk landed his troops ashore with his flagship Ahmetiviye and ordered all craft back into harbor escorted by PT boats assisted by destroyers while PTs fired warning shots over their bows should any German vessels be sighted without stopping or returning fire; this operation is called "The Battle off Tattooine". Afterward both units debarked their ships disembarking marines one last time at Naples Italy where they took up quarters with Army units awaiting demobilization that never happened as World War II ended less than a year later on August 14 1945 with Japan surrendering ending hostilities between America and Japan). As a result of World War II service members received multiple medals including two ribbons: Marine Unit Commendation Medal with oak leaf cluster (югославийский кредитный маршрут), also known as "Chevron" ribbon; Bronze Star Medal; United States Naval Overseas Service Ribbon - 1944-1945
