The Lovington Air Force Base gift history began on December 7, 1941 when the United States of America declared war on Japan. The base was activated on December 8 and soon began receiving supplies and equipment from the United Kingdom. On February 5, 1945, the base received its first Boeing P-40 Warhawk fighter aircraft from the Royal Air Force. On May 2, 1945, the Lovetton AFB gift history reached its height when it became home to over 100 U.S.AAF personnel stationed in three buildings: the Commanding Officer's Quarters (COCOQ), Dowling Barracks #1 and #2, and later renamed Wright-Patterson AFB Annex #1 and #2. This number would grow as more planes were added to the airbase including Douglas AD-4 Skyraiders and North American P-51 Mustangs. In total, Lovetton AFB had a gift history that totaled over 350 units! Inactivated on September 15, 1946; replaced by Benson AFB in 1949-.
Lovington is a small town in the Mexican state of New Mexico. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is located on the banks of the Rio Grande in what is now southern New Mexico. Lovington's history dates back to 1892 when it was founded by George and Anna Loving, who were immigrants from Ohio. The Lovings built a log cabin on the bank of the river and named their settlement after their firstborn son, John A. Loving. In 1915, they moved to an existing Adobe ranch which they owned and which they still live in today. Their children became involved in many aspects of life in this small community including farming, ranching, education, banking and politics. They are buried at Good Friday Cemetery there with all their loved ones who died during World War II – including father George and mother Anna - as well as many other post-war settlers such as Donny Schaeffer and his wife Margaret (Maggie) Schaeffer who each laid down their lives for their fellow citizens during that conflict.

Lovington, New Mexico was founded in 1847 by Captain John C. Loving and his wife, Mexican-born Maria de la Rosa. The town grew rapidly during the late 19th century due to its location on the Chihuahua-New Mexico Railroad, and its access to irrigated land. The town's population peaked at over 10,000 in the 1920s, but has since declined as a result of loss of jobs and rural migration. In recent years, however, Lovington has seen a resurgence in development due to its close proximity to Durango and other nearby cities. The town is located on the south bank of the Rio Grande at an elevation of 4362 feet (1320 meters). It lies within the Apache National Forest and is bordered by Silver City to the north, Black Mesa to the east, San Miguel County to the southeast, and Socorro County to the west. The downtown area is home to several businesses including banks (JPMorgan Chase & Co., Bankwest), health clinics (New Mexico Health Care Foundation Inc., UnitedHealthcare), schools (Chavez High School/Stroud Middle School), a library (Lovington Independent School District), as well as a few churches. Lovington was built around what is now known as Main Street. One side of Main Street runs along riverbank while another side follows a road that served as a main route between Durango and Santa Fe until it was replaced by Interstate 10 in 1960. The old main street still exists today adjacent to Chavez High School which serves as both a public school and cultural center for Lovington.
In 1847, the town of Lovington was founded by General John F. Carr in what is now northeastern New Mexico. Carr and his family were the first white people to live in the area and began developing the land that would become Lovington. The town was named after a love story between two pioneers, James and Maria Carr. In 1865, Lovington became part of the Mexican state of Chihuahua. After it gained its independence from Mexico in 1912, Lovington became a United States municipality.
