The Lovington Army National Guard unit stationed in New Mexico deployments have a long and proud history. The unit was first organized on November 15, 1912 as the 1st Battalion, New Mexico Volunteer Infantry Regiment. In 1916, the battalion became the 2nd Battalion, New Mexico Volunteer Infantry Regiment and in 1918 it became the 3rd Battalion, New Mexico Volunteer Infantry Regiment. On November 8th of 1924, the regiment was redesignated as the 4th Brigade Combat Team Bravo Company-New Mexico Army National Guard. In 1970, Bravo Company (4th Brigade Combat Team) was rebrigaded to become element A of brigade MIKE (3rd Cavalry Division). The brigade then moved from Albuquerque to Lovington on October 1st of 1971 and elements were activated there that fall including elements A & B of brigade MIKE. In 1978-79 elements C & D were added and in 1984-85 elements E & F were added making up full brigade Mike which deployed to Grenada for Operation American Eagle I which ended with a victory for United States forces over Iran’s Islamic Republic regime. On September 10th of 1990 an element from brigadeMikedeployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom I where they played a significant role throughout most of the campaign until replaced by a different element less than one year later during Desert Storm II when that also ended successfully. There has been no deployment since but elements have remained mobilized domestically at various location across NM while “on call” status under state guard jurisdiction should mobilization occur again in future years if needed or desired
