The Coast Guard gift history in Lovington, New Mexico began with the establishment of the Coast Guard Station in 1914. The station was located on the present-day site of Lovington Elementary School. The first coast guard personnel arrived at the station on December 12, 1914. In 1935, a new lighthouse was built adjacent to the Coast Guard Station and it became known as lighthouse number 2. In 1941, a new harbor was constructed and lighthouse number 3 replaced lighthouse number 2. In 1948, an airfield was constructed adjacent to the Coast Guard Station and it became known as airfield number 1. In 1958, a new bridge spanning Union Creekwas built and it became known as bridge number 2. In 1969, the Coast Guard Station relocated to its current location on East Second Street in Lovington after years of being housed at various locations within town limits. During this time period, additional buildings were erected at airfield number 1 and harbor complex Number 2 (later renamed simply “Lovington”). On November 8, 1984, President Ronald Reagan dedicated a brand new section of highway between Albuquerque and Gallup named for Rear Admiral James P Kennedy who had died in an airplane accident two years earlier while serving as commanding officer of Destroyer Squadron 5th Fleet during Operation Desert Storm; Rear Admiral Kennedy is also commemorated by an artifact from his squadron that resides at Coastal Command Headquarters in Norfolk Virginia (now part of US Navy's Naval Air Forces Central Command). This well-wishing gesture caps off a noteworthy year for coastal defense which saw installations across New Mexico join forces to offer enhanced capabilities including better sensors and technology along with more training opportunities for local coastguardsmen throughout summer 1985 when national Defense Electronics Show was held in Las Vegas Nevada; this event provided lucrative deals for products developed by companies based in nearby El Paso County. Lovington, New Mexico is a small town in the US state of New Mexico. It's located in and around the city of Albuquerque, on the east side of the Rio Grande. The population was 5,569 at the 2010 census. Lovington is named after John L. Loving, a rancher who settled there in 1887. Lovington first came into being as an agricultural community during the early years of Spanish rule in New Mexico. After independence from Spain was gained by Mexico in 1821, ranching became an importantstay for many New Mexicans because it allowed for easy access to goods brought overland from Santa Fe by Mexican traders and soldiers. By 1865, Lovington had become a thriving agricultural community with considerable livestock and crop production. It wasn't until 1890 that Lovington began to develop into what it is today as a town; this was due to land grants given to residents by Governor Don Carlos Alvarado (1846-1924). In 1912, Lovetton incorporated as a town under Article XI of the NM Constitution which designated it as an election precinct for all UCD students living on or near campus at NMU (later UNM). In recent decades, Lovington has seen significant growth both within its borders and across Albuquerque; most notably through its annexation by neighboring city of Albuquerque in 2006. Despite this growth potential, much remains unchanged about the small town's traditional lifestyle: rural churches still service their congregations from their backyards while music reverberates through local nightlife venues; farmers sell eggs from their barns during morning
Lovington was founded in 1849 by John and Jane Loving, who named it after their birthplace, Lovellsville, Virginia. The town was originally called Durango but changed its name to Lovington in 1851 because of the growing population there.
