The Lovington National Guard was organized on October 1, 1912 in Lovington, New Mexico. The unit was originally composed of nine men and became a full-time organization on July 1, 1914. The guard operated out of the town hall until 1922 when they moved to their present location at the old schoolhouse.

Lovington, New Mexico is a small town in the Rio Grande Valley region of southwestern New Mexico. The population was 5,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of Pima County. Lovington has been inhabited by native peoples for over 10,000 years and today it is a small town with a rich history. In 1865, two men from Lovington named John and James Henson bought 160 acres (65 ha) of land in what is now Lovetton on the east side of the Rio Grande. They named their property "New Mexico" after President Abraham Lincoln's new nation – an act which also helped to stave off secession attempts by some Native American tribes in that area. In 1868, they erected a log cabin known as the White House on their property. The first post office was established in Lovetton in 1870, and continued until 1907. The first store in Lovetton wasestablished on Main Street in 1872 by Isaac Wertheimer & Brothers grocery store owners Jno Eckhardt & German Lappe. The early settlers were primarily farmers who grew crops such as corn, beans, potatoes and wheat along with cattle and horses for ranching purposes; although there were several shops and restaurants opened up over time including: The Golden Donuts Cafe (1911-15), Armstrong’s Drug Store (1914-16), Moran’s general store (1920-22), The Button Factory (1925-27), Jimmie’s Hotel/ restaurant(1929-32). Lovetton had its start as an agricultural center during the 19th century when many pioneers started moving into this area from further west to escape violence and political instability back home; among these people were brothers John Henson and James Henson who founded New Mexico Territory near present day Albuquerque while still living at their rancho south of present day San Angelo; they began farming cottonseed oilseed fields along the Rio Grande River valley between Nowata Junction on the Arkansas River upstream from Albuquerque to El Paso about 15 miles northwest of modern day Lovington whereupon moved into operationside house built using salvaged lumber drawn upriver near Nowata Junction circa 1875 or so I believe based upon account given by family member William Sitton Sr.; remaining siblings James & Nora Henson took title 3 years later when farmstead split due to death or personal feud within family 2 sisters left then 4 brothers took title live 1967 - remains are now 6 living descendants . . .
