When the first coffee beans were grown in Portales, New Mexico, people knew that they had something special. The land was rich in minerals and the climate perfect for growing coffee. From there, the journey began for those who would make coffee their life’s passion. To this day,Portales Coffee Company remains a mainstay in the town and its cafes continue to serve up delicious cups of java. The portales area has been known as a hotbed of trade since before Spanish settlers arrived in 1764. The town was founded by Captain Manuel de la Hoya on what is now Daytona Beach Boulevard. By 1821, when General Antonio López de Santa Anna came to Portales with his army looking for resistants against Mexican rule, he discovered coffee growing here and decided to establish a plantations. Santa Anna brought over 50 men to help him grow coffee and build plantations throughout New Mexico. These men became known as La Familia (The Family) because they worked together closely until their deaths in 1847. It wasn’t until 1865 that Mayor José Gomez y Ortiz granted tax breaks to three small brewers who wanted to start brewing their own coffee instead of buying it from La Familia ships sailing out of Galveston Bayou every day. This allowed Portales Coffee Company to become one of the most successful small businesses in New Mexico during this time period. In 1933, Mr. & Mrs. Johnnie Cochran opened Donner House Cafe which quickly became popular due to its excellent food and convenient location next door on Donner Street between First Avenue and Broadway Streets In 1935-1936, Mrs . Cochran added a second floor so that customers could enjoy more comfortable dining experiences at her cafe while still being able to walk down Donner Street for breakfast or lunch! What started as simply two places serving good food turned into one of Albuquerque’s most popular tourist destinations! During World War II whenportales was occupied by Japanese forces,Donner House Cafe served as Headquarters for American Forces stationed here! After the war ended, Mrs . Cochran sold her business and moved back home but returned once again in 1957 when she opened Donner House Garden which continues operations today!

Portales is a small town in northern New Mexico. It was founded by José de Portales in the mid-19th century as a rancho (farm) on the banks of the Rio Grande. The town grew rapidly during the 19th and 20th centuries, due to its location on a main trade route between Albuquerque and Santa Fe, and its many businesses, including an insurance company and a glass factory. The town's architecture is based largely on Spanish colonial style, with few exceptions. Many of the buildings were built using materials available in Portales at that time, such as adobe bricks and stone. A number of commercially significant businesses have been closed over the years, but remnants of some of these businesses still stand today. The town has experienced several periods of decline since the early 21st century, most recently due to economic problems caused by population growth outside of Portales' borders. However, recent efforts by local officials to revive the economy have began to result in some modest improvements for both residents and business owners around town.
In the 18th century, Portales was a small settlement on the west bank of the Rio Grande in what is now New Mexico. The first European to explore and map the area was José de Urrea, who named it San Miguel de Portales after his patron saint, Miguel de Portales. In 1795, Spanish military officer José Antonio Peralta explored and mapped much of today's New Mexico Territory. He discovered what is now called Paso del Norte (the present-day town of Albuquerque), which he named San Marcos de la Hacienda for hisfavorite saint. In 1813, Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna moved his army from Tucson across the Colorado River into what is now New Mexico Territory. Montezuma II had designated this region as part of Hispania Narbonensis in 1521 when Spain ceded California to France as part of Alta California. When Santa Anna arrived at Fort Tejon in 1812 with an army seeking control over this region following Mexicos victory over Napoleon Bonaparte at Buena Vista Creek, he found that many settlers had already fled to east Texas and northern Mexico due to religious persecution by Spain. Santa Anna ordered his men not to enter the area and instead march southward towardspuerto Prieto where they were met by Ute chief Manuel Ortiz who surrendered without a fight.
