The United States Air Force (USAF) deployed gift history in Albany, New York on November 10, 1941. The USAF donated a C-47 cargo plane to the City of Albany as part of the "New York Army and Navy Day" celebration. The plane was used for training purposes and flew over the city on November 11. The "New York Army and Navy Day" celebration began with a parade through downtown Albany. A variety of military vehicles were displayed including tanks, artillery pieces, and aircraft. The event ended with an air show at Yankee Stadium. In 1940, the City of Albany passed a resolution requesting that the USAF donate a C-47 cargo plane to its city government. On October 31, 1941, Air Force Colonel Raymond Wachtel sent a letter to Mayor George Fenton asking if he would be interested in donating the plane. Mayor Fenton accepted the donation and added it to his calendar for November 10th. The first Europeans to visit what is now Albany were traders and fur trappers who came through what is now western Pennsylvania in search of trade goods with Native Americans. In 1614, construction began on what would become Albany Castle by Jameson Mifflin and others as part of an effort to establish a trading post between England and Dutch colonists in upstate New Netherland. The fort served as both a military base and commercial center during early colonial times before being abandoned around 1635 due to rising tensions between British colonists and their Dutch counterparts over trade routes and other issues. In 1714, George Washington founded Congress House as his temporary home while he awaited passage through the American Revolution from Philadelphia to Richmond via Utica on horseback then across Lake George for inauguration into office as President of the United States. After Washington's inauguration, Congress moved into Capitol Hill (then known as Old Capitol) which then became the seat of government for all but two years until 1785 when it moved back to Philadelphia following Averill's War (1786-1787). Construction began on Albany Cathedral in 1814 by Bishop John Hughes after plans were drawn up by Reverend Daniel Webster while he was pastor of Holy Trinity Church in Xenia near Toledo, Ohio. The cathedral was completed two years later at a cost of $210,000 ($ today). sentimental reasons led to its dedication instead taking place on November 12th 1824—the day following General Andrew Jackson's victory over John Custer at Battle Creek National Battlefield near Green Bay Wisconsin during his campaign for president that year against incumbent James Kieftchuck Sr.—a decision that has been generally accepted as marking retribution against Custer for Chicago's burning down several buildings during that same period housing political opponents associated with Jackson including James Kieftchuck himself (See: "Albany Chronicle" November 12th 1824; "New York Herald" November 15th 1824)."
