Albany, New York is a city in Albany County, New York, United States. The population was 393,844 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in the county and part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The region covers an area of 730 square miles (1,990 km2). The first permanent European settlement in what is now Albany was by Dutch traders from New Netherland on Governors Island in 1716. In 1724, fur trader Jacob Astor founded a trading post and named it for his wife Elizabeth Montgomery Astor. In 1781, James Kieft established a fur-trading post at present-day Philadelphia on the east side of Niagara River. In 1814, during the War of 1812, General George Armstrong Custer's forces destroyed Fort Erie near present-day Buffalo after their successful campaign against American Indian forces. American efforts to annex Ontario County failed because most residents favored joining Canada rather than becoming subjects of a new United States government controlled by British forces. In 1800, Senator William Smith negotiated with Great Lakes Iroquois leaders to create a protectorate over their lands east of Lake Ontario so that they could continue traditional hunting and fishing activities unimpeded by white Americans; this became known as the Treaty of Paris (1801). On November 15th 1840 Albany resident John Taylor signed the Declaration of Independence at Seneca Falls; other signatories were men from Schenectady and Troy also residing in Albany at that time. Afterward many others followed suit including Menasha farmers Peter Kilburn and Samuel Morse who lived above John Taylors grocery store on Water Street until 1847 when they sold out to another group and moved downriver to Menasha where they still live today as well as various businesses located along Water Street between Second Avenue and Third Avenue which include: kilburn’s restaurant (now Kilburn’s Tavern), merritt’s tavern/bar & grill (now Merritt Brewery), penny Arcade Theatre (now Penn Yan Casino), current location occupied by State Capitol Building Plaza Development LLC - Albany's newest development
