The National Guard in Albany, New York has a long and varied history. The unit was first organized on October 15, 1861 as the Company D of the 1st Albany Regiment. It was renamed the 2nd Albany Regiment on November 8, 1861 and then the 3rd Albany Regiment on December 19, 1861. On May 25, 1872, the regiment was redesignated as the 1st New York National Guard Infantry. The regiment served in various local campaigns and battles during Reconstruction before being mustered out on March 9, 1875. The unit was reactivated on July 10, 1879 as part of the new state army and served until it disbanded at war's end in September 1898. The 1st New York National Guard Infantry Museum is located in downtown Albany and preserves many of the regiment's military artifacts. The museum is also home to a large collection of American Revolutionary War era clothing and equipment.
The National Guard is a military reserve force in the United States. It was created as part of the Morrill Act of 1862, after the American Civil War. The National Guard Service Act of 1935 designated it as an auxiliary militia service to be available for federal purposes, and made it a full-time military force. The Albany National Guard was organized on September 25, 1792. The first unit was raised on October 15th and the first regiment to serve was the 1st Regiment of Infantry. On November 10th, the 1st Regiment of Infantry fought at Saratoga Springs against British forces. The Albany National Guard served in a variety of campaigns through the years including the American Revolution, War for Independence, and World War I. In 1924, the Albany National Guard became an arm of the United States Army Reserve. In 1953, the New York State Legislature passed Assembly Bill No. 552 which gave state troops within New York City military status as part of Mayor John Lindsay's inner city strategy known as "Operation Takeover." This Act also created the County Defense Force which provided security for county government buildings in Manhattan and Brooklyn during this time period. After Mayor Lindsay resigned in February 1954 following his conviction for corruption charges, Lieutenant Colonel Edward J. Kelly took over command of the Albany National Guard from Colonel Kelly until Governor Nelson Rockefeller appointed a new lieutenant colonel on July 1st, 1955 who continued command until January 1957 when he retired due to age sixty-six. The present day is that Lieutenant Colonel Timothy Murtagh takes command from Major General Timothy Smeeding effective January 1st, 2019

The guardsmen were originally recruited from militia units in New York and Pennsylvania. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson designated the National Guard an "auxiliary service" of the Department of War and authorized it to provide military assistance to state militias in times of war or emergency. In 1937, Congress passed legislation establishing a permanent National Guard system with full autonomy within the Department of Defense. The first unit activated under this new system was the 9th Infantry Regiment, which served during World War II as part of Army Forces Europe. Albany, New York is a city in the Finger Lakes region of Upstate New York. It is the seat of Albany County and the largest city in the Thurston County metropolitan area. The population was 723,935 at the 2010 census. The name "Albany" first appears on a map in 1624 as Albinia. It was incorporated as a town in 1825 and became a city in 1865. The earliest settlements at what is now Albany were along two streams that ran through present-day Albany and other towns north of it: Beaver Creek and Seneca River. These early settlers were part of the Iroquois Confederacy, which controlled much of central New York during this time period. In 1795, when Great Britain acquired control over all of North America, Albany became part of British Canada under the terms of the Treaty of Paris. This acquisition left Albany with little power but increased responsibility for its citizens because it lay within Canadien territory! For many years, however, Albany remained an important center for trade and commerce between Canada and American colonies across the Atlantic Ocean. This led to strong Anglo-Canadian feelings within both communities – one that still persists to this day! In 1807, after almost fifty years as Canadien territory, Albany reverted back to American control under Ulysses S. Grant's administration – an event known as "The Great Unification." From here on out, things began to change for Alexander Hamilton's hometown! Aided by new technologies like steamboats and railways (which would soon make Albany one of America's most populous cities), growth continued apace even while Canadien authorities tried to contain it! Consequently, by 1830s nearly all vestiges of Canadien culture had been displaced by English values and ways – including some draconian laws passed against Native Americans who continued to resist British encroachment into their homeland! However, despite these challenges%, consumption habits among locals continue largely unchanged even today; proof that we are not just remnants from another era…but something infinitely more complex than that!

The population was 158,213 at the 2010 census, making it the second-largest city in New York after New York City. It is also one of the most populous cities in upstate New York; according to 2016 estimates, it is home to over 350,000 people who live within its borders alone. The city was founded on December 3, 1785 by James Braddock and Sir George Clinton as part of a military expedition led by General Burgoyne against British forces at Saratoga Springs. The first European settlements were made on what is now Albany's east side by Dutch landowning families in 1624 and 1625. French traders established fur trading posts along the Hudson River during this time, but these ventures failed because of competition from English traders. In 1715, Peterontown was founded on what are now Fulton Street and Park Avenue by colonists from Nova Scotia with support from King George II of Great Britain for trade purposes only. The first known reference to Albany appears in John De Witt’s "Diary" (1686): "It seems strange that no town or village hath been erected hereabouts since our departure out of Canada." In 1725, following an inspection tour by Benedict Arnold and his brigade leader Colonel William Johnson (of Princeton), General James Braddock decided upon an attack against Fort Duquesne under cover of darkness while other British forces stayed behind to harry Pennsylvania(). After an arduous march through dense woods northeastward towards Monmouth Junction (now Schenectady), they reached Bear Lake on July 8 after daysOf marching through harsh conditions at temperatures below freezing (−14 degrees Celsius). Reached their destination just before dawn on July 9th after finally overcoming difficulties including deep snowdrifts and difficult terrain roads newly created during winter weather conditions; they constructed two small huts—one for Generals Johnson and Armstrong and one for Major Leonard Woodbridge—to shelter among rocks near where today Delaware Avenue meets State Street.. On July 10th General Braddock ordered his men into battle dress: “the field” he called it “being very spacious […] A good number were armed with shot guns […] There being but few defenseless women there were no more than three or four score unarmed horsemen about us”….Braddock then ordered results be reported back to England so that reinforcements could be sent…A formal review took place that day before proceedings turned Pageant-like around Lieutenant Colonel Johnson whoaddress'd all present with bow &c.:...it having pleased God we had got possessione of this post without any Opposition
