Amityville is a town in Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was 6,828 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New York City Metropolitan Area. Amityville is located on the banks of the river Amity near where it joins the Hudson River. The name "Amityville" derives from two villages that unified to form this town: Amity and Hiawatha (now part of Yonkers). The first settler in what would become Amityville was John Barker, who arrived in 1777. He named his tract after his friend, the Reverend Samuel Greenough of nearby West Haverhill. In 1814, Amos Emerson settled in what would become Amityville after buying land from Nicholas Conklin. In 1834, Daniel Webster purchased some land in what became Amityville from Nicholas Conklin for $6,000 and began construction on a large house there called "Webster's Farm". He also built a barn and three other buildings on his property. Internet entrepreneur Randolph Carter bought Webster's Farm in 1961 and later renamed it "Carter Manor". In 1970, he sold it to real estate developer Seymour Lipset for $2 million. In 1973–1974, affluent parents moved into one of Lipset's buildings and began to experience strange events around their home which they dubbed "the amity incident." On November 14th-15th of that year residents reported seeing four people wearing masks outside their home with orders not to come back until all children were released from school; when no such restrictions were placed upon any other area within the town limits nothing unusual occurred beyond normal parenting skills at playtime! No prosecutions or charges were ever brought against these individuals as no crime had been committed! The residents gradually grew tired of this unsupervised behavior so on December 1st 1974 they convened an assembly under the auspices of their local police department to voice their concerns about possible abuse or exploitation taking place inside their home by unknown parties; however instead they received a lecture on how responsible homeowners should be during tense times like these!
