Amsterdam is a city in the Netherlands. It is the largest city of the country, with a population of approximately 1 million as of 2017. Amsterdam is also the political and economic center of the Netherlands, with a large concentration of high-profile businesses and finance industry. The city was founded on April 30, 1253 by brothers Adam and Hendrick de Valk as a small trading post on an embankment over the river IJ. The name "Amsterdam" comes from Amstelredamme, which is still used today to describe the central area around Dam Square. The first reference to Amsterdam can be traced back to c. 870 when it was mentioned as Amstenrade in either a document or charter from Count Floris I of Holland. In 1095, this county was divided into two parts, one part became part of Holland proper and another part formed what are now Utrecht and Rotterdam County. In 1140–41, Groningen County was created from this portion of Holland proper. This gave rise to myths that Amsterdam emerged out of Utrecht or Rotterdam; these statements are not supported by evidence. It should be noted that during its earliest years Amsterdam did not have any close ties to either Utrecht or Rotterdam – it grew independently under various leaderships until it attained its current form as an urban center in 1253 when Adam de Valk merged his two brother's businesses: selling food stamps for bread and beer (Gouda) at his store called 't Hoeveelste Pieter'. From then on Amsterdam acted as its own self-governing entity within what were then Dutch provinces (the last being Gelderland). In 1409/10 Burgomaster Jan van der Goes replaced Christiaan de Boer as Mayor of Amsterdam after De Boer's assassination; however, he only held office for six months before he too was assassinated soon afterwards.. This left Vice Mayor Nicolaas Pauwels in charge until 1415 when he succeeded van der Goes as mayor again but only stayed in office for four months due to illness unrelated to politics before retiring back home again.. In 1417/18 Martinus Tulp took over from Pauwels but only held office until 1440 due to personal reasons before dying suddenly at age 58 while serving in exchange duty at Gouda market place.. Soon thereafter Antoon Bogerd assumed control over affairs until 1448 when he too died suddenly after 29 years service.. 2nd Ward Alderman Pieter Bakel took over duties for about 4 years starting in late 1440s through early 1450s after Bogerd's death leaving vacant seat 15th century AD continued vacancy because no person could gain citizenship rights since no qualifications had been met such that they could serve continuously without interruption
