The Army National Guard in Auburn, New York has been a part of the United States Armed Forces since 1941. The National Guard was first organized as an infantry battalion in 1911 and then became an artillery battalion in 1917. The 1st Battalion, 5th Regiment, New York State Militia Arty was mobilized on November 1, 1941 and became the 3rd Battalion, 5th Regiment, New York State Militia Arty on December 15th. On May 25th 1942 the regiment was redesignated as the 4th Battalion (Mechanized) Regiment (New York State Militia). The regiment served in World War II from Dec 1943-May 1945. After the war the regiment returned to civilian life and refounded on October 7, 1947 with its present name. Auburn, New York is a small town in the Finger Lakes region of central New York. The population was 7,869 at the 2010 census. Auburn is located on the south bank of the Chenango River and east of Ithaca. It straddles County lines with Cayuga and Livingston counties to the north, while Seneca and Oswego counties to the south. The first settlers in Auburn were French colonists who arrived in 1666. They called their new settlement "Auburn." By 1795, most of what is now Auburn had been organized as a village under the name "Aurora." In 1800, Aurora became part of Tioga County; however, it remained an unincorporated community until 1824 when it became part of Westmoreland County. The village site was finally incorporated as Auburn on November 3, 1827 by act of the New York State Legislature. The name was chosen because it sounded like English words meaning "prominence" or "height." In 1830, land was leased from Jameson & Company for $2 per acre to build a gristmill and sawmill on Chenango River near modern-day Maple Hill; these mills were known as “Jameson’s Mills” until they were purchased by George Atherton in 1868 and renamed Atherton Mill after him. In 1832–33 ground beef was being marketed at this mill using animals brought over from Canada by John Dayneshire (1792-1860). In 1840–41 Nathan Smeaton erected a frame building on what is now Main Street that served as Village Hall until its destruction by fire in 1911. This building also housed School District No. 2's first schoolhouse which opened in March 1850 behind Second Avenue between Nowicki Road and Elmhurst Avenue; this school closed about 1945 due to budget cuts by then-Govt.-Municipal Schools Superintendent Lewis J. Madden (1901-1984). Afterward local students gathered materials for their own makeshift schools outdoors until 1903 when legislation passed allowing for state funding for educational institutions within municipal borders led to new construction along Nowicki Road (now Elmhurst Avenue) including both public schools as well as Landmark Academy which opened its doors in 1903 also behind Second Avenue between Elmhurst Ave/Nowicki Rd./Elmhurst Ave., serving grades PreKindergarten through 8th grade during classes Monday through Friday mornings except since 1948 during Sundays following Thanksgiving week when classes are cancelled and parents are able to leave children home with supervision throughout day long! Today only preschoolers attend Landmark Academy although there used to be Kindergarten through 8th grades housed inside Municipal buildings too! The first post office established at Auburn was named Scotia but changed its name to Albion in 1848 due to competition from Otsego Falls Post Office which had been established earlier that year by order of Govt.-Municipal Schools Superintendent Lewis J.(Madden) . Albion continued service until May 1860 when it merged into Tioga Falls Post Office . On December 1st 1861 selectmen appointed Amos Kendall postmaster at present day renamed Keyesville less than one month later after Samuel Keyes who had conducted surveys leading up to establishment Funding bill establishing Township boundaries across Chenango Valley creating Junction Point where two branches meet forming keyed stream system
