Auburn, New York is a town in Jefferson County, New York, United States. The population was 9,878 at the 2010 census. The town was named for General George Washington's home on Auburn Lake. The first coffee house in Auburn opened in 1824 and it remains the only coffee house in Auburn that still operates today. Coffee beans from this first coffee house were used to make the first cup of coffee in America.

Coffee became popular in Europe and America because of the cost-effective methods used to produce it. The first coffee was grown in Ethiopia about 7,500 years ago. The beans were roasted over an open fire and then ground into a coarse powder. Early coffee houses in London and Paris used this type of coffee because it was much cheaper than other types. In 1795, Dutchman Johan Baptist van Helmont discovered a process for brewing coffee that allowed for more expensive cups of coffee than earlier methods. This discovery made possible the spread of coffee culture throughout the world. Java was the first place to start producing coffee beans commercially, followed by Cairo in 1825 and then Peru in 1845. As technology improved, so too did the quality of coffees available for purchase from various sources around the world. In 1928, Dutchman Philips de Hoogendorp introduced what is now known as instant coffee which gave people an easy way to enjoy their favorite beverage without having to go out on a journey to get it. Instant Coffee has since become one of the most popular drinks on earth!
The first coffee was roasted in Sumatra, Indonesia, in the year 1095. The beans were brought over by sailors on their way to India. The Portuguese discovered and traded with Arabia and Java before they began trading with India. In 1600, a Dutchman named Abel de Heem took possession of the island of Java and started to trade with Southeast Asia. He also discovered yet another source of coffee – the Indonesian island of Bali. In 1659, the Dutch East India Company acquired a stake in Bali from the Spanish for £5,000 and started importing coffee from this new source. Coffee became so popular that traders throughout Europe began smuggling it into England using ships called "the Barbary Corsairs." This made for some interesting stories about how coffee ended up where it did: in London's white whale oil tank!
Auburn, New York is one of the most successful small towns in Upstate New York. The town was founded by fur traders in 1798 and has since been a center for agriculture and industry. The community is located on the southern tip of Auburn Lake, about 25 miles north of Syracuse, and about 60 miles east of Albany. The first permanent settler in Auburn was James Kieft. He came to the area in 1798 and built a cabin on the bank of the lake. Kieft's cabin still stands today and is a museum open to the public. In 1814, Griggs purchased land from Kieft and began farming what is now Auburn Village. Over time, other settlers arrived including David Rice who built a house on Cemetery Road in 1829. In 1847, John Burt erected a windmill on Auburn Creek which became one of the early mills in upstate New York. In 1870, Jethro Dyer opened his general store at 204 Main Street which remains an important part of town life today. In 1896, Reverend John Fenton organized Christianity's first mission church in Auburn Village with intentions to bring new members under one roof.. Over time, many industries have sprung up in Auburn including paper manufacturing (1893-1901), leather tanning (1920-1927), food processing (1937-1945), auto parts manufacture (1945-1970) and biomedical equipment manufacturer (. 1970 until present). The local hospital has also been active throughout its history with various medical procedures being performed there such as operations for toothache or childbirth. Auburn has always had strong ties to Syracuse both culturally and through education; much like Syracuse itself has grown over time into one of Upstate New York's largest cities with more than 1 million residents! With so many businesses based hereabouts it’s easy to see why this small town has stuck around for so long – it’s got something for everyone!
