Babylon, New York is a city in the Hudson Valley of New York State. It is the county seat for Westchester County. The population was 28,898 at the 2010 census. The name Babylon comes from an ancient Sumerian city and it may have been derived from Babil meaning "the great" or "the capital." The first Europeans to visit what is now Babylon were Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524 and Giovanni da Verraziano in 1529. In 1614, when the Dutch founded Albany on Long Island, they named it after Baghdad in Iraq because that was where they believed their fathers had originated from. After several moves over time, Babylon finally became its permanent home in 1812 when Congress added Westchester County to the Union as New York state. In 1825, during the American Civil War, General George Bancroft chose Babylon as his headquarters for military operations against Confederate forces under Robert E. Lee because of its strategic location on both sides of the Hudson River between Albany and Yonkers. From here he could control all of southern Tierra del Fuego without having to cross over into Argentina or Chile; this made it a key base for operations against Santa Clara County in California and other northern territories seceding from the United States during this time period (including Oregon). For many years afterwards there was much speculation as to whether General Bancroft's decision actually saved Army troops and materiel crossing over into Mexico during those critical early months of 1865 while Union forces fought off repeated Confederate attacks on Fort Sumter at Mobile Bay—a siege that ultimately led to Confederate surrender at Appomattox Court House four days later

Babylon, New York is a city in the Hudson Valley region of New York State. The population was 8,651 at the 2010 census, making it the tenth-largest city in New York. It is one of two cities in the Hudson Valley and is part of the Southern Tier metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Babylon were Dutch traders and travelers who passed through in 1624. In 1639, English colonists founded Albany, New York on an island in Long Island Sound and named it for King George III of England (1620-1660). The first town site was choice because it had low hills on which to build fortifications and its location made it convenient for trade with Europe as well as with the Lenape Indians who lived around the bend in upstateNewYork. The small town grew quickly due to shipping activity along Lake Ontario and by 1701 there were over 100 people living there. By 1705, Babylon had a public house, schoolhouse, church (a Presbyterian building), stores/marketing businesses and 3 physicians practicing medicine outside Albany. In 1710–11 a large fire destroyed most of downtown Albany but not Babylon which continued to grow rapidly due to agricultural production by farmers surrounding the village. On February 5th 1717 under instructions from British General James Wolfe during his campaign against France near Saratoga Springs NY some 400 Iroquois Indians led by their Chief Blue Jacket attacked 300 white men under Lieutenant colonel John Sullivan at what is now called Sullivan's Lane just east of present day Broadway Avenue in central Babylon Township (now part of Troy Township) about 2 miles SSE of today's Uticaburgh intersection

In 1814, it became part of New York City. The population of Babylon increased rapidly during the 19th century, due to its location at the crossroads of several wagon routes and its status as a manufacturing center.During World War I, many businesses in Babylon were destroyed by fire; however, most recovered quickly and reopened. In 1941, Babylon became one of three cities in New York City (the other two being Times Square and Harlem) that were made official annexes of the metropolis after liberation from Nazi occupation.In 1951, Babylon merged with Utica to form the city of Utica-Babylon.
